1997
Vidar and Delfina Lillelid and their daughter Tabitha were killed during a 1997 carjacking in Tennessee. Their young son Peter survived being shot. Six teenagers traveling together were prosecuted, and the case generated continuing questions about their individual roles and sentences.
1995
Colleen Slemmer was killed in Knoxville in 1995 after being lured away by fellow Job Corps participants. Christa Pike and Tadaryl Shipp were convicted of murder, while Shadolla Peterson pleaded guilty as an accessory. Coverage often focuses on Pike’s age and the cruelty of the attack.
2016
Sixteen-year-old Emma Walker was killed by a shot fired through her bedroom wall in Tennessee in 2016. Her former boyfriend Riley Gaul was prosecuted after investigators examined his conduct before and after the shooting. He was convicted of first-degree murder.
1925
Teacher John Scopes was prosecuted under Tennessee’s prohibition on teaching human evolution in public schools. Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan helped turn the trial into a national media event. The later play and film Inherit the Wind fictionalize it; Summer for the Gods distinguishes history from that retelling.
