Heidi Firkus

Two emergency calls and a decade-long investigation

Heidi Firkus died in her St. Paul home in April 2010 after an emergency call reporting an attempted break-in. Her husband Nicholas told police an intruder had shot them both. The investigation examined that account alongside the couple’s financial circumstances. A jury convicted Nicholas of premeditated murder in 2023, and he received life imprisonment without release. Minnesota’s Supreme Court upheld the conviction in February 2026, concluding that the circumstantial evidence supported the verdict.

Court document

State v. Nicholas Firkus — 2021 criminal complaint

The original charging document sets out the investigators’ allegations and probable-cause narrative, including the emergency calls and scene examination. It predates trial and is not itself proof of guilt. The later conviction and appeal are documented in the separate reporting linked here.
