The emergency call behind Kari’s Law
Kari Hunt was killed by her estranged husband in a Marshall motel room in 2013. Her daughter tried to call 911 but the telephone system required an outside-line prefix. Her family’s campaign helped change emergency dialing requirements for covered multiline phone systems.

Covered multiline telephone systems must allow direct 911 dialing without an outside-line prefix and provide required notification. Related dispatchable-location requirements come from RAY BAUM’s Act and should be distinguished from Kari’s Law.
