CASE 438Tallahassee, Florida

2014

Dan Markel

Florida State University law professor Dan Markel was killed at his Tallahassee home in July 2014. The investigation uncovered a murder-for-hire plot and led to several prosecutions. His former brother-in-law Charlie Adelson was convicted in 2023; former mother-in-law Donna Adelson was convicted in 2025 and sentenced to life imprisonment that October. Reporting, court coverage and his mother Ruth Markel’s memoir document the criminal proceedings alongside the family’s grief and efforts to maintain relationships with his children.

CASE 417Orange County and Merritt Island, Florida

2010

Alissa Blanton

Alissa Blanton, 23, was killed outside her Orange County workplace in February 2010. Roger Troy, a man she had met while working at Hooters, shot her and then himself. Days earlier, Blanton had asked a court for an emergency protective order; it was declined on the information presented. Reporting examines the warning signs and her family’s subsequent calls for stalking awareness. Her case is a major thread in The Hooters Murders: Deadly Shift.

Two-year-old Caylee Anthony disappeared in Florida in 2008, and her remains were found months later. Her mother Casey’s false statements drew intense scrutiny. In 2011, a jury acquitted Casey of murder and the other major charges, while convicting her of lying to investigators.

CASE 156Orlando, Florida

2006

Unresolved disappearance

Jennifer Kesse

Jennifer Kesse disappeared from Orlando in January 2006. Her car was found elsewhere, and surveillance captured a person whose face was obscured by a fence. Her family’s search and efforts to obtain investigative records have become central to coverage of the unresolved disappearance.

CASE 029Sarasota, Florida

1997

Sheila Bellush

Sheila Bellush was murdered in her Florida home in 1997 while her young quadruplets were there. Her teenage daughter discovered the scene. Investigators traced the hired killing to Sheila’s former husband, Allen Blackthorne, and a chain of intermediaries. The prosecution showed that the attack was an arranged murder, not a random intrusion.

CASE 414Port Richey, Florida

1997

Tanya Hillerud

Tanya Hillerud, a Hooters employee, was shot and killed at her Port Richey home in 1997. Her boyfriend Vincent Rizzi was convicted of first-degree murder in 1999 and received a life sentence. Her story is one of five included in the 2026 documentary The Hooters Murders: Deadly Shift. The film connects separate cases through the women’s employment; it does not describe a single offender or coordinated series of crimes.

CASE 037Florida, United States

1993

Bobby Kent

Bobby Kent was lured to a secluded area in Florida and murdered in 1993 by a group of young people who knew him. Accounts of bullying and abuse within the group became central to the case. The investigation exposed how conversations about stopping Kent escalated into a coordinated plan to kill him.

CASE 049Florida & Ohio

1993

The Eddie Lee Sexton family case

Eddie Lee Sexton’s family fled Ohio for Florida while authorities were investigating abuse. In 1993, an infant in the family died, and Sexton later directed his son to kill Joel Good, the baby’s father. Prosecutors said the killing was intended to keep Good from revealing the family’s crimes and whereabouts.

CASE 043Sanford, Florida

1991

Jayne & David Miller

Jayne Miller discovered that her husband, David, had another wife. She confronted his deception and was fatally shot in Florida in 1991. The investigation exposed his double life, including claims about secret government work. The case turned a seemingly successful marriage into a story of bigamy, fabricated identities, and murder.
