Aileen Wuornos shot and killed seven men in Florida in 1989 and 1990. She gave differing accounts of the encounters, including claims of self-defense. Convicted of six murders, she became the subject of documentaries, biographies, and the dramatized film Monster.

Judy Buenoano · “Black Widow

Judy Buenoano poisoned her husband, drowned her son, and attempted to kill a fiancé with a car bomb. Investigators connected events that had initially been treated separately. Her prosecutions in Florida led to widespread use of the media label Black Widow.

1997

Sheila Bellush

Sheila Bellush was murdered in her Florida home in 1997 while her young quadruplets were there. Her teenage daughter discovered the scene. Investigators traced the hired killing to Sheila’s former husband, Allen Blackthorne, and a chain of intermediaries. The prosecution showed that the attack was an arranged murder, not a random intrusion.

The Eddie Lee Sexton family case

Eddie Lee Sexton’s family fled Ohio for Florida while authorities were investigating abuse. In 1993, an infant in the family died, and Sexton later directed his son to kill Joel Good, the baby’s father. Prosecutors said the killing was intended to keep Good from revealing the family’s crimes and whereabouts.

Jayne & David Miller

Jayne Miller discovered that her husband, David, had another wife. She confronted his deception and was fatally shot in Florida in 1991. The investigation exposed his double life, including claims about secret government work. The case turned a seemingly successful marriage into a story of bigamy, fabricated identities, and murder.

Bobby Kent

Bobby Kent was lured to a secluded area in Florida and murdered in 1993 by a group of young people who knew him. Accounts of bullying and abuse within the group became central to the case. The investigation exposed how conversations about stopping Kent escalated into a coordinated plan to kill him.

Two-year-old Caylee Anthony disappeared in Florida in 2008, and her remains were found months later. Her mother Casey’s false statements drew intense scrutiny. In 2011, a jury acquitted Casey of murder and the other major charges, while convicting her of lying to investigators.
