CASE 104Springfield, Missouri

2015

Dee Dee & Gypsy Rose Blanchard

Dee Dee Blanchard presented her daughter Gypsy Rose as seriously ill and dependent, concealing a history of medical abuse. In 2015, Nicholas Godejohn killed Dee Dee in a plan involving Gypsy. Both were convicted, and later media explored the abuse as well as the murder.

CASE 168Missouri

2002–2007

Shawn Hornbeck & Ben Ownby

Shawn Hornbeck was abducted in Missouri in 2002. Four years later, the investigation into Ben Ownby’s abduction led police to Michael Devlin’s apartment, where both boys were found in January 2007. The rescue connected two missing-child cases that had initially seemed unrelated.

CASE 430Columbia, Missouri

2001

Kent Heitholt & Ryan Ferguson

Sports editor Kent Heitholt was killed outside the Columbia Daily Tribune in Missouri in 2001. Ryan Ferguson was convicted after his friend Charles Erickson implicated him, but witnesses later withdrew key testimony. An appeals court overturned Ferguson’s conviction in 2013 because prosecutors had withheld evidence, and the charges were dropped. Erickson, who had pleaded guilty and later challenged his confession, was released on parole in 2023. Their different legal outcomes are central to understanding the case.

CASE 065Springfield, Missouri

1992

Unresolved disappearance

The Springfield Three

Sherrill Levitt, her daughter Suzie Streeter, and Suzie’s friend Stacy McCall vanished from a Springfield, Missouri, home in 1992 after graduation celebrations. Their cars and personal belongings were left behind. With no clear explanation for all three women’s disappearance, the case became one of the region’s most closely followed mysteries.
