Kent Heitholt & Ryan Ferguson

A sports editor’s killing and a conviction overturned

Sports editor Kent Heitholt was killed outside the Columbia Daily Tribune in Missouri in 2001. Ryan Ferguson was convicted after his friend Charles Erickson implicated him, but witnesses later withdrew key testimony. An appeals court overturned Ferguson’s conviction in 2013 because prosecutors had withheld evidence, and the charges were dropped. Erickson, who had pleaded guilty and later challenged his confession, was released on parole in 2023. Their different legal outcomes are central to understanding the case.

Charles Erickson’s release from prison in 2023

A concise account of Erickson’s release after nearly two decades in custody. It distinguishes his guilty plea and later recantation from the overturned conviction of Ferguson, helping readers avoid treating parole and exoneration as the same legal result.

Ryan Ferguson — exoneration case profile

A detailed research profile traces the evidence used against Ferguson, the appellate ruling and the decision to drop the case. It also records later civil litigation and separately notes Erickson’s parole. This is a registry account, not the original judgment.
