A murder conviction and a separate conviction reversed
Jeff Zack was killed at an Akron gas station in June 2001. John Zaffino was convicted of the murder, and his conviction survived appeal. Investigators also pursued Cynthia George, who had been romantically involved with both men. Her conviction for complicity was reversed in 2007 because the appellate court found insufficient evidence that she solicited or procured the killing. This case guide keeps those different outcomes explicit and pairs the Killer Couples episode with the reversal and subsequent reporting.

The appellate opinion reverses Cynthia George’s conviction for insufficient evidence and explains why proof of a relationship and motive did not establish solicitation. It also distinguishes her appeal from Zaffino’s murder conviction, which the court had affirmed.
