1949–1968

Marie Noe

Eight of Marie Noe’s infants died under circumstances once attributed to unexplained natural causes. Decades later, investigators reopened the Philadelphia case and obtained admissions. Noe pleaded guilty to eight counts of second-degree murder in 1999 under an agreement that included probation and psychiatric evaluation.

1991

Laurie Show

Sixteen-year-old Laurie Show was attacked and killed in her Pennsylvania home in 1991. Investigators uncovered hostility and harassment connected to a teenage relationship. Lisa Michelle Lambert and Tabitha Buck were convicted of murder. The case later generated extensive litigation over the evidence and the conduct of the investigation.

2012

Skylar Neese

Skylar Neese left her West Virginia home with friends Rachel Shoaf and Shelia Eddy in 2012 and did not return. Investigators eventually learned the two had killed her in Pennsylvania. Their guilty pleas exposed a planned murder behind months of misleading accounts about her disappearance.

Tanya Kach

Tanya Kach disappeared at 14 in 1996 and spent ten years under the control of school security guard Thomas Hose. In 2006 she disclosed her identity and was reunited with her family. Her memoir and a Lifetime dramatization describe the coercion behind the prolonged disappearance.

Bennet Omalu & football brain injuries

Pathologist Bennet Omalu examined the brain of former professional football player Mike Webster and helped bring attention to chronic traumatic encephalopathy in football. His findings and the resistance surrounding them became the subject of reporting and the film Concussion. The story explores sports, medical evidence and institutional responsibility.

Rachel Carson & Silent Spring

Biologist and writer Rachel Carson investigated how pesticide use harmed wildlife and ecosystems. Silent Spring challenged assumptions about chemical safety and brought the issue to a wide audience. Her work helped stimulate public demands for stronger environmental oversight, although later regulatory decisions involved many people and scientific reviews.
