Unforgotten Casebook — One case. Every angle. One place.2006 · Selmer, Tennessee
The Selmer minister’s death and a manslaughter verdict
Matthew Winkler, a minister at Selmer’s Fourth Street Church of Christ, was fatally shot in March 2006. His wife, Mary, was found with their three children in Alabama the following day. At trial, she alleged abuse and said the shooting was accidental; prosecutors disputed that account and sought a murder conviction. The jury instead found her guilty of voluntary manslaughter in 2007. The linked reporting and book explore the trial without treating contested testimony as established fact.

ABC News · April 2024
A retrospective featuring interviews and trial coverage examines the competing accounts of the Winkler marriage. Allegations made by Mary Winkler remain attributed testimony; the legal outcome was a voluntary-manslaughter conviction, rather than the murder verdict prosecutors requested.
