Sherri Papini claimed she had been kidnapped in California in 2016 and blamed two Latina women. Investigators later determined she had stayed with a former boyfriend. She pleaded guilty in 2022 to mail fraud and making false statements, after years of public concern over the supposed abduction.

CASE 104Springfield, Missouri

2015

Dee Dee & Gypsy Rose Blanchard

Dee Dee Blanchard presented her daughter Gypsy Rose as seriously ill and dependent, concealing a history of medical abuse. In 2015, Nicholas Godejohn killed Dee Dee in a plan involving Gypsy. Both were convicted, and later media explored the abuse as well as the murder.

CASE 438Tallahassee, Florida

2014

Dan Markel

Florida State University law professor Dan Markel was killed at his Tallahassee home in July 2014. The investigation uncovered a murder-for-hire plot and led to several prosecutions. His former brother-in-law Charlie Adelson was convicted in 2023; former mother-in-law Donna Adelson was convicted in 2025 and sentenced to life imprisonment that October. Reporting, court coverage and his mother Ruth Markel’s memoir document the criminal proceedings alongside the family’s grief and efforts to maintain relationships with his children.

CASE 105Massachusetts

2014

Michelle Carter & Conrad Roy

Michelle Carter encouraged Conrad Roy to take his own life through messages and conversations before his death in 2014. Her involuntary-manslaughter trial raised questions about responsibility for conduct carried out through a phone. Documentaries and dramatizations revisit the messages and the court’s reasoning.

CASE 436Bloomington, Illinois

2014

Pamela Zimmerman

Pamela Zimmerman, a financial planner and mother of three, was killed in her Bloomington, Illinois, office in 2014. Prosecutors charged her former husband Kirk Zimmerman, arguing that financial conflict provided a motive. His defense challenged the investigation and argued that other leads had been neglected. A jury found him not guilty in May 2019. Dateline’s later report and local trial coverage offer different entry points into a case where an accusation must not be presented as a conviction.

CASE 237Manhattan, New York

2013–2019

Anna Sorokin · “Anna Delvey”

Using the name Anna Delvey, Anna Sorokin presented herself as a wealthy heiress while pursuing a private arts club in New York. A Manhattan jury convicted her in 2019 of eight offenses, including grand larceny and theft of services, and acquitted her on two counts. Reporting, a former friend’s memoir, and the scripted series Inventing Anna offer different perspectives on the case.
