CASE 428Texarkana, Arkansas

2013

Patricia “Patti” Wheelington

Patricia “Patti” Wheelington was killed at her Texarkana home in December 2013. The investigation focused on Virginia Hyatt, whose husband had been involved with Wheelington, and tested her account against surveillance and other circumstantial evidence. A Miller County jury convicted Hyatt of capital murder in 2016, bringing a life-without-parole sentence. Arkansas’s Supreme Court affirmed in 2018, with two justices dissenting. The opinion and local coverage allow readers to examine both the ruling and the disputed evidence.

CASE 141West Virginia & Pennsylvania

2012

Skylar Neese

Skylar Neese left her West Virginia home with friends Rachel Shoaf and Shelia Eddy in 2012 and did not return. Investigators eventually learned the two had killed her in Pennsylvania. Their guilty pleas exposed a planned murder behind months of misleading accounts about her disappearance.

CASE 433Darden, Tennessee

2011

Holly Bobo

Nursing student Holly Bobo disappeared from her Tennessee home in April 2011; her remains were found more than three years later. Zachary Adams was convicted in 2017, while two other defendants resolved their cases through pleas. Subsequent reporting examined a key witness’s recantation and Adams’s efforts to obtain another trial. A July 2026 ruling denied a renewed request. The case’s source record includes the original prosecution and later challenges, which should be read in their procedural context.

CASE 157Bloomington, Indiana

2011

Lauren Spierer

Indiana University student Lauren Spierer disappeared after a night out in Bloomington in June 2011. Investigators reconstructed her movements, but no account has established what happened to her. Books, podcasts, and reporting revisit the timeline and her family’s continuing search for answers.

CASE 417Orange County and Merritt Island, Florida

2010

Alissa Blanton

Alissa Blanton, 23, was killed outside her Orange County workplace in February 2010. Roger Troy, a man she had met while working at Hooters, shot her and then himself. Days earlier, Blanton had asked a court for an emergency protective order; it was declined on the information presented. Reporting examines the warning signs and her family’s subsequent calls for stalking awareness. Her case is a major thread in The Hooters Murders: Deadly Shift.

CASE 435San Juan Capistrano, California

2010

Chris Smith & Edward Shin

California entrepreneur Chris Smith’s family received emails suggesting he had left his business behind to travel. Investigators later found that his business partner, Edward Shin, had killed him in their San Juan Capistrano office in June 2010 and impersonated him afterward. An Orange County jury convicted Shin of murder for financial gain in 2018. Dateline later interviewed Shin after his life sentence, examining the business relationship and the messages that had misled Smith’s loved ones.
