CASE 437St. Paul, Minnesota

2010

Heidi Firkus

Heidi Firkus died in her St. Paul home in April 2010 after an emergency call reporting an attempted break-in. Her husband Nicholas told police an intruder had shot them both. The investigation examined that account alongside the couple’s financial circumstances. A jury convicted Nicholas of premeditated murder in 2023, and he received life imprisonment without release. Minnesota’s Supreme Court upheld the conviction in February 2026, concluding that the circumstantial evidence supported the verdict.

CASE 418Las Vegas and Boulder City area, Nevada

2010

Prisma Contreras

Prisma Contreras, 21, was abducted after leaving work at the Hooters Casino Hotel in Las Vegas in January 2010. Her body was found in her vehicle near Boulder City. Gregory Hover was convicted and sentenced to death in 2013. Richard Freeman pleaded guilty to two murders, including hers. Contemporary sentencing coverage and the later documentary trace how investigators connected the offenses. The separate defendants’ legal outcomes should not be treated as interchangeable.

Bernard Madoff’s investment operation concealed a Ponzi scheme that collapsed in 2008, causing devastating losses to investors and charities. The Wizard of Lies follows the fraud and its consequences; its HBO adaptation and a Netflix documentary series offer different screen treatments.

Two-year-old Caylee Anthony disappeared in Florida in 2008, and her remains were found months later. Her mother Casey’s false statements drew intense scrutiny. In 2011, a jury acquitted Casey of murder and the other major charges, while convicting her of lying to investigators.

CASE 094Mesa, Arizona

2008

Jodi Arias & Travis Alexander

Travis Alexander was killed in his Arizona home in 2008. Photographs recovered from a camera and changing accounts became central to the investigation of his former girlfriend Jodi Arias. She was convicted of first-degree murder after a closely watched trial in 2013.
