1978–1991
Jeffrey Dahmer murdered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. When Tracy Edwards escaped his Milwaukee apartment, police discovered evidence of the killings. Reporting and documentaries have also examined missed opportunities to intervene and the experiences of victims’ families.
1993
Eddie Lee Sexton’s family fled Ohio for Florida while authorities were investigating abuse. In 1993, an infant in the family died, and Sexton later directed his son to kill Joel Good, the baby’s father. Prosecutors said the killing was intended to keep Good from revealing the family’s crimes and whereabouts.
2022–2026
Seventeen-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla drove into a brick building in Strongsville, Ohio, on July 31, 2022, killing her boyfriend Dominic Russo and their friend Davion Flanagan. She survived. After examining video and other evidence, a judge found that she had deliberately caused the crash and convicted her of murder in 2023.
2002–2013
Ariel Castro abducted Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus in Cleveland and held them for years inside his house. Berry’s escape in 2013 led to the rescue of the other women and her daughter. Their accounts describe both captivity and life after rescue.
1989
Ten-year-old Amy Mihaljevic was persuaded by a caller to meet him at an Ohio shopping center in 1989, supposedly to help buy a gift for her mother. She disappeared, and her body was found months later. The deceptive phone call became a central clue in the investigation into her abduction and murder.
1998–2017
Attorney Robert Bilott began representing a West Virginia farmer in 1998 and uncovered records concerning PFOA contamination near DuPont’s Washington Works plant. The wider litigation and environmental enforcement brought scrutiny to drinking-water exposure and the reporting of chemical risks. His work is dramatized in Dark Waters.
